How do dogs learn?

Dogs learn most effectively through positive reinforcement – This means rewarding them (praise, food, play etc) for good behaviour rather than telling them off for bad behaviour. Most of what we perceive as bad behaviour is in fact, normal dog behaviour, punishment at these times can be very confusing to the dog and create fear problems that can in turn, lead to more displays of dog behaviour that is, unfortunately, not appropriate in our human world. Our goal should always be to set our dogs up for success not failure; so lets’ make it possible for our dogs to get it right. More learning and motivation to learn will happen using positive reinforcement methods where your dog is allowed to have choice's.

Dog’s learn when they get it right, they are more likely to repeat a behaviour if they have been rewarded for doing it in the past; that is why we should always set our dog’s up to succeed; they get it right, they get rewarded, they enjoy the reward, next time they are asked they get it right because they remember how great it was for them the last time they did it. This is one of the reasons why we break down most behaviour’s into sections; it helps the dog learn each component completely before moving on to the next one.

A training session is about engaging and connecting with your dog. The exercises are just tools to help foster that connection, so even if you and your dog do not perform an exercise perfectly, as long as your dog is looking happy and engaged with you, your half way there.
